Three months of the new year have already passed and Jack Frost has given up on nipping at our noses, instead leaving a new season of shows right under them! Working through the heap of upcoming anime every season can be a bit of a hassle, so Miso’s here to shine a light on the most exciting and promising members of the spring anime 2018 lineup.
Newcomers
Spring anime that are neither sequels, prequels, or otherwise connected to another series. Hopefully just like the cherryblossoms these anime will bloom into something lovely.
Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii
Following the awkward dating life of a fujoshi and gamer who also just happen to be coworkers, Wotakoi puts a spin on childhood friendship turned romance with some otaku flavoring thrown in the mix. As mentioned in our 2018 Spotlight, this rom-com is based on a manga of the same name that scored no.1 with female readers in “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” 2016. Now that the adaptation’s almost here fans are getting really excited!
Devil’s Line
Vampires heavily saturated the romance genre for some time but even the most commonly used tropes and cliches can still be used skillfully with terrific results. Hopes are high for this supernatural love story which focuses on Anzai, half vampire (or “devil”), and Tsukasa, a normal girl, as he guards her from the shadowy characters lurking in the city and they form a tentative bond that tests the limits of Anzai’s vampiric nature.
Mahou Shoujo Site
A new magical girl hits the scene this season with Mahou Shoujo Site. It tells the story of Aya Asagiri, a girl weighed down by persistent bullying from schoolmates and at home from her abusive brother. One day while browsing the internet, she stumbles across a suspicious site and is told by an even more suspicious person that she’s been granted magical powers! It follows in the footsteps of it’s predecessors Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Princess Tutu, and others by including dark themes amid the sparkles and rainbows of magical girl life.
