An Ode to 2019: An Anime Year to Remember – Best anime of 2019

2019 has ended, and it’s almost been two full months already. Day 365 came and went, but a new beginning has ultimately begun. Before we forget about our previous journey, let’s discuss some things first — You guessed right, it’s anime time!

Hottest on the Street

Before we can even look forward to the anime that we’re going to be gifted with in 2020, let’s not forget the amazing year of anime that we just witnessed. It’s going to be hard waiting for My Hero Academia’s fifth season – waiting the entire year for this season was a pain in the you-know-what, but it’s here and as fans let’s love it til the end.

My Hero Academia is indisputably one of the most popular Shounen anime in recent years, although 2019 brought to us a selection of other good anime. To name a few let’s begin with the widely acclaimed anime of the year, Demon Slayer. The series has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since February 15th 2016, but we were blessed with the anime adaptation this year. If you haven’t watched it yet you sure are missing out. Demon Slayer (JP: Kimetsu no Yaiba) boasts an exciting story set in the Taisho era of Japan. With many fleshed out characters, the cast is anything but dull. Don’t get too attached, though.

What I loved the most about Demon Slayer was the animation. The battle choreography is fluid and aggressive, although arguably beautiful. To compliment it further, the use of flowing ink animations is used, giving the anime an otherworldly feel. All in all, the work put into Demon Slayer created a masterpiece, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from Ufotable, the animation studio behind the Fate series.

The Underdog

An anime that doesn’t receive much viewer love but was very impressive this year is Vinland Saga. A show about war and bloodshed; what is there not to like about it? Appreciation is what it needs and appreciation is what I will give it — this show is not for sensitive viewers, but I advise everyone who can stomach it to give it a watch.

The Rising of the Shield Hero, that’s it…. Just kidding.

If you’re a slow anime watcher like myself you may have just heard about this anime. The Rising of the Shield Hero is an isekai about a foreigner being summoned to a different world, only to become one of the four Shield Heroes. Carrying a Sword Art Online-esque vibe, this anime cracked my best anime in 2019 list!

Best of the Decade

We can go on and on about the anime we were gifted with, but what’s a yearly breakdown list without One Piece? Nevermind best anime of the year, One Piece is one of, if not, the best anime of the decade! That Strawhat crew is still going strong and I doubt the journey even ends in 2020, considering the recent release of the One Piece movie, Stampede. The evolution of the manga’s art and the animation of this anime speaks for itself. When I think of 2010s anime, One Piece is what comes to mind. How could you not love the best main character of all time (besides Goku, of course), Luffy?

Honorable Mentions

The Promised Neverland – An anime centered around three children and their incredible plan to escape the clutches of a mysterious orphanage.

Psycho-Pass 3 – Probably the most intriguing anime I haven’t spoke about yet. It gives me a Cowboy Bebop feel, mixed with cunning and epic storytelling. Again, Psycho-Pass 3 questions morality and ethics in a cyberpunk-infused setting. Still curious? I thought so.

Food Wars, an anime about food… Must I say more?

Bringing it all together

2019 was a long but great year full of anime. Among the many thrown at us I’ve yet to watch them all. As I get out of here to prepare my all-nighter of anime binging, there is something I must ask: What are your favorite anime of 2019? Let us at miso hear about it!
