Manga Minis March (May) Madness: Square Enix Romances

Welcome to Manga Minis March (May) Madness, where I accidentally forgot to finish what I started! I meant to write three columns of two reviews apiece in March, but unfortunately personal stuff got in the way. Now that I’m back, let’s get to a couple cute romantic tales, courtesy of Square Enix Books!

My Clueless First Friend Volume 1 (Square Enix Books)

When the airheaded but lovable Takada moves into a new school, he hears mysterious rumors of Nishimura the “grim reaper. Rather than cower in fear, he jumps at the chance to get to know her more. What follows is an elementary school friendship that may blossom into even more in the future. While the chapters in this omnibus are mostly episodic, there’s hints of character development throughout. Nishimura learns to get out of her shell and Takada becomes sensitive to his surroundings when he’s with her. It’s an all-ages slice-of-life that explores childhood surprisingly well.

I felt similar vibes reading The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses when checking this manga out. However, I prefer this one since the relationship dynamic is much healthier here. Takada is brash but kindhearted, and all his actions are done with love and passion. It’s a refreshing take on the ditzy archetype, and I enjoyed reading every page.

There are some chapters which have the usual ending tropes, with Nishimura embarrassed but happy by the results. However, all of it has an air of genuine love to it, and the simplistic art style complements the no-frills storytelling. I was surprised at the emotional depths midway exploring the duo’s relationship with each other, and I’ll definitely check out the next installment soon.

My Happy Marriage Volume 2 (Square Enix Books)

While our previous title had implied magical themes, this next review has some actual magic. My Happy Marriage continues the Taisho-era romance with a rags-to-riches female protagonist and her fiancé. It might not win new readers yet, but those invested from the previous volume will have a lot to love.

Miyo Saimori continues her betrothal to Kiyoka Kudo as the two navigate their relationship. While she struggles with her inferiority complex due her lack of Spirit-Sight, Miyo learns to enjoy her circumstances. However, news travels fast and Miyo’s younger sister Kaya becomes envious of the situation. In an emotional rush, Kaya plans to break Miyo’s relationship with Kiyoka in order to get married to him instead.

Like I said in my previous review, I enjoy the historical setting of My Happy Marriage. It adds a unique flair to the shojo series, and lessens the supernatural aspects this volume. However, there’s still much to improve with the protagonists’ relationship, though I’m enjoying the character development. I’m struggling to relate to Miyo’s internal hangups, and she puts herself down way too many times. Thankfully the supporting cast does a great job lightening the mood, so there’s potential with Miyo’s character arc. That said, the art is spectacular and complements the story with lush backgrounds.

Overall, this volume won’t convince anyone who’s on the fence. However, it’s a lovely treat for those who were invested already.
